Join our dedicated team of Wildlife Response volunteers in Homer and the surrounding areas to support ASLC’s mission - generating and sharing scientific knowledge to promote understanding and stewardship of Alaska’s marine ecosystems.
As an ASLC Wildlife Response volunteer, you will be responsible for the following.
- Respond to stranded marine mammals on local beaches. Responses are always under the direction of ASLC staff, and may include observing and photographing animals, posting signs, speaking with the public, rescuing and transporting live animals, collecting carcasses and recording data according to existing protocol.
- Report all observations and relevant information to the on-call ASLC staff member.
- Complete periodical online training courses.
- Commit to at least 12 hours per calendar year or the equivalent. All hours must be logged and reported to the ASLC Volunteer Coordinator.
Applicants must be self-motivated, physically fit with a good sense of balance and be able to lift over 50 lbs. Must be able to follow instructions over the phone. Ability to send and receive text messages is desirable. Living in or around Homer is preferred.
